1999 symbolizes my "freedom" time: I was a college graduate, gainfully-employed, virtually debt-free, and single/childless. I pretty much did what I wanted and didn't have to report to anyone or commit to any thing. This past week felt like I had stepped backwards in time, as Meg decided, on a whim, to drive to Salt Lake City--with kids in tow--and stay with my parents for a week. Since I wasn't part of the road trip, you'll have to encourage her to share any stories , although she has confessed to me that she's done with blogging. Here are the highlights of the back-in-time party that was this week: Exercise : Besides my daily 11-mile round trip commute by bike to the office, I went on three other bike rides around Clackanomah County, swam at the pool twice, and ran once. Cleaning : Organized some of our outdoor living space, cleaned the house from top-to-bottom, washed the G20, cleaned my bike, and manicured the outside landscape. Sleep : Every night wa...
From Little North Fork Hike Aaron and Eddie have both accompanied me on hikes along the Little North Fork of the Santiam (see 2007 and 2008 ), but Meg and I couldn't figure out if she had ever been before. But it was definitely Ian's first visit. We left the house late in the afternoon, and when you are with Ian-the-Ravenous, it's hard to accomplish much. So we made it to the "beach," a nice rocky shore along the river that provides ample amounts of sun and shade (depending on your fancy)--but, most importantly, oodles of rocks for throwing into the river. The older boys both ventured into the shallows of the river, and both fell in and got their pants/shorts soaked. Edward was wearing green sweat pants and a green sweatshirt (I encouraged his several times during the day to wear shorts and a t-shirt). But they didn't seem to care and kept playing in the shallows. But since we didn't hike very far, it didn't take long to hike back to the car (and the s...
Ian has reached the age of six. In the past year, he has begun kindergarten, not gotten his hair cut, and transitioned to riding a bike with pedals. Ian had his first birthday party at JJ Jump with half of his kindergarten class, which even included a couple of girls--girls! Ian gets along better with Edward, as demonstrated by Ian always attacking Aaron; he often sits on Aaron's head and never misses the chance to attack whenever Aaron is on the ground. Ian likes to talk. A lot. He enjoys jumping on our neighbor's trampoline, usually with the older kids in the neighborhood. Ian maintains strange eating habits: he will take his breakfast (often chicken nuggets) under the table, while eating extremely slowly, so he can sit near the heater while watching My Little Pony (he's seen every episode about five times) on his little laptop. He may or may not have an Oedipus complex like Edward had, as he says he loves Meg the most and thinks she's cute. Here is a quick interv...
